﷽
Know – may Allah guide me and you to the best behavior – from the greatest manners are the following ten:
- When you meet a Muslim, greet him by saying “As salāmu alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh“, and if he/she greets you first, then answer by saying “Wa alaykumus salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh“.
- When you want to enter someone’s home/room, ask for permission, stand on the right or the left of the door. If you are granted permission, then enter. However; if you are told to return, then return.
- When you wish to eat or drink something, mention Allah by saying “Bismillāh“. Eat with your right hand, and eat that which is closes to you. When you finish (eating), lick your fingers and say “Alhamdulillāh“.
- Speak good, and lower your voice (while speaking), and be easy and relaxed in your speech. Listen to the one who is speaking with you, be attentive and do not interrupt. Do not precede elders in speech.
- When you are ready to go to sleep, make wudu, and lay down on your right side, and then recite Ayatul-Kursi once, then put your palms together and read Surah al-Ikhlās into them, and the Mu’awidhatayn (an-Nas & al-Falaq) then blow into your hands and wipe what you are able to of your body, do this three times.
- When you sneeze cover your face with your hand or your shirt, and say “Alhamdulillāh“, then when you are told “Yarhamuk Allāh” reply by saying “Yahdikum Allāh, wa yusliha bālakum“.
- Suppress your yawn as much as you can, and cover your mouth with your hand, and do not say “Aaah, Aaah” (i.e. do not make yawning sounds).
- When you come to a sitting, give the greeting of salām, sit at the edge of the sitting, do not sit between the sun and the shade. Do not go between people, and separate them except with their permission. Do not get anyone up from their place of sitting, make room for the one who entered. Remember Allah in the sitting, and the least remembrance that you can do is by saying: “Subhānaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illa Anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaika“.
- Give the path/street its rights. Lower your gaze, abstain from causing harm, return the greeting, encourage and order others to do goodness, and prevent evil.
- Dress in a beautiful manner, and the best clothing is white in color, it should not go below your ankles. Begin with the right when putting it on, and with the left when taking it off.
